Fulmar

The images show the stomach of a fulmar from Normandy in France before and after the opening. Plastic particles are shimmering through the thin stomach wall. Between 2003 to 2007 plastic was found in the gastrointestinal tract of about 95% of the studied birds, on average it was 35 particles.

In the left petri dish, the stomach content with plastic particles can be seen, on the right, for comparison, the stomach content after normal feed intake. Stomachs of fulmars are said to be an indicator for plastic pollution in the North Sea.
