Several marine protected areas have been established in remote regions in the South Atlantic Ocean. For example, Ascension, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Gough and the Falkland Islands are part of the marine protected areas. Surveys between 2013 – 2018 indicate that plastic pollution at beaches, the water surface and seafloor has enormously increased in those remote areas and is comparable to the pollution in the North Atlantic.
